McPhailBoating Fun on the Canal

Group Coordinator: David McPhail (click to contact)

Every Tuesday (there’s a sort-of term time) from 10.45am - 1pm (see below for details).

A Boat Club in Islington.

The boat group provides members with an opportunity to have fun on various flotation craft on various waterways in and around London. The craft available include kayaks, canoes, boats, narrowboats and other vessels. Beginners are very welcome and every event includes a social activity before and/or after the aquatic outing.

The core activity is at the City basin at the Islington Boat Club which runs “Upper Deckers” — more details here. Upper Deckers provides kayaks (the most popular activity) and a traditional canal barge (a long multi-person canoe; small sailing dinghies may sometimes be available subject to interest). It provides instructors, lifejackets (though of course the canal isn’t very deep!), changing rooms and lockers, hot drinks and biscuits. Upper Deckers runs from 11am-1pm every Tuesday throughout the year (except for the summer school holidays); there is a charge of £5 per session. There is the option of a pub lunch near the Club afterwards.

The HotTug recently featured in the Evening Standard can be hired from this venue if there are enough fun-loving folk willing to join in — more information here.

There are of course many other venues in and around London for water-based fun and we hope to offer club outings on a regular basis. Examples include narrowboat canal trips, canoeing trips on the waterways around the Olympic Park, boating around Little Venice, wakeboarding and paddleboarding in the Royal Albert Docks and kayaking and boarding on the River Thames (for example at Westminster). Weekend away trips (e.g. narrowboat or kayaking) are also possible if enough members are interested. Members' suggestions for group outings are strongly encouraged!

If you would like to join us, please click on my name in the box above or register through Beacon. The Autumn Term session at the Islington Boat Club started on Tuesday 26th September.
