TurnerThe group's interest is in discovering and researching local history — Islington and adjoining boroughs. It is a discussion group where individual interests can be shared and joint projects taken forward.

Group Coordinator: Sarina Turner (click to contact)

We meet bi-monthly on the third Wednesday in the month from 2 to 3pm.

We meet at the Walter Sickert Community Centre, Canonbury Crescent, N1 2FB, which is just off Essex Road and easily reached by bus.

Last year — its fourth year — the group concentrated on research and presentations since local walks and visits are now well catered for by other iU3a groups. Our meetings covered Memories of an Islington Childhood in the 40s/50s, Spa Green Estate, a visit to Canonbury Tower, An Activist in Islington, Continuity and Change along the River Lea, Upper Street research and participation in London and national research projects. All topics were enthralling in different ways and we are extremely grateful to the researchers, speakers and to co-ordinators Anne Wilkinson and Liz Simpson.

This next year we plan to focus on friendly shared discussion with a theme set for each month and each member making a brief (five minutes or so) contribution. The theme of the first meeting, which is on 15 November, is “Where I Live” (house, building or street) and if possible members will bring a relevant document, photo or artefact to show. Themes suggested for later meetings include lost shops, important Islingtonians, special trades in Islington such as silversmiths in Finsbury, blue plaque people. More ideas — and members — welcome!
