LATIN

Members of iU3A are invited to join this group which is run by Crouch End and District U3A. Latin with fun for up to 10 or 20 members.

Please contact: groups.iu3a@gmail.com and we can then forward your contact details to Sandra Clark (Co-ordinator of the Latin Group, Crouch End & District U3A)
When

The Group meets fortnightly on Wednesdays at 2.00pm.
Where

Alternatively on Zoom and in a public space.

(This is taken verbatim from the Crouch End website)

The group has evolved to around the old O-level standard. One or two members are less advanced but are happy to extend themselves; and one or two are more advanced, but we all support each other in decoding the Latin texts and improving our skills. Help is available if you are working at a lower level and need someone to explain grammar points or mark your ‘homework’ from your own private study.

Nil desperandum – fortuna fortibus favet.

We welcome new members to the Latin group, but please note that it is not suitable for beginners. We meet fortnightly, on Wednesday afternoons, and are about to try out a new venue, the Muswell Hill Bookshop, 190 Fortis Green Road, N10 3 DU. Our procedure is to work with two texts in alternation, one poetry, one prose. The prose text, which we have just begun, is Tacitus, Annals XV. The poetry text is Vergil, Aeneid, Book 2, which we are soon to begin. We each prepare the same passage at home in advance of the meeting, and at the meeting we translate in turn, discussing any matters of interest or difficulty that arise as we go. It is a lot of fun, and we all enjoy it. The group is around 8/9 members at the moment.

If you would like to come for a taster you would be welcome.

We prepare and translate some prose and poetry each week. We tackle grammar points 'as we go’ and are currently having a stab at scanning poetic metre. There are usually six to eight of us present. We are a co-operative group to learn and enjoy Latin; and we can peep into an ancient mindset. No tests, exams, failures or feeling stupid. Just some mind-stretching, and valuable insights into our own culture. If you’d like to come along and try, someone will share a book with you to get you started. Our Administrator Optima, Sandra Clark, is the person to contact (through the iu3a Groups Coordinator email as above).
