Ancient Greek is surprisingly like modern Greek, and the
alphabet’s the same. So many English words come from Greek –
including alphabet! – and on to zoology, with photograph and
telephone in between. A lot of the letters are like ours,
and we’ve borrowed others like pi.
We can
accommodate both beginners and members who already know
Greek. The aim is to have fun, though scholars are welcome
too. Joiners need to spend about £5-10 on second-hand books,
which can be obtained (amongst other places) from the Hellenic
Book Service in Kentish Town.
The
Group will play with different approaches to Ancient Greek
whilst we get to know each other and see how things develop.
Then we will decide what to do next. The convener will bring
a big Greek dictionary to each meeting. We can also use
Google translate!
It is a
co-operative group effort to learn and enjoy Ancient Greek
and peep into an ancient mind-set. No tests, exams, failures
or feeling out of your depth.
