Background
United by a concern for the plight of refugees and asylum seekers, we volunteer with local organisations providing front-line assistance including the Islington Centre for Refugees and Migrants (ICRM), Speak Street, and the East London team of Care4Calais UK.

Opportunities include: general befriending, English language learning in two Islington locations, as well as online; reading with clients, helping them to fill in required forms for vital services; translating; collecting and sorting clothing donations; participating in the choir, dance classes, sewing and other activities offered at the centre. Professional staff are always on hand to assist clients and volunteers.

At the Centre, members can be involved in group activities like choir, dance and drama, making and serving lunch, as well as helping participants with reading, speaking, filling in forms, etc. Professional staff are on hand to assist participants and volunteers.

Online volunteers assist ICRM teachers in classes and are welcome to prepare simple talks of 3-5 minutes on topics including art, history, nature, music etc. The aim is to share both cultural and practical information to help refugees improve their language skills. For any of these volunteering opportunities, please contact the Group Coordinator in advance for a link to a short volunteer form and safeguarding guidance.

Information and updates are shared in emails from the Group Coordinator. Emails may include requests for donations of coats, shoes and household items needed by asylum seekers and news of campaigns in support of refugees and asylum seekers.

If you would like to know more about asylum seekers, please listen to a talk from the Group Coordinator given to a previous iU3A monthly meeting here.
